The Power of Voice in Property Management
Dec 12, 2023I had the pleasure of hosting Skye Taylor, the owner of Taylored Property Management and state leader for PM Collective in South Australia.
The Power of Networking in Property Management
Our conversation kicked off with Skye sharing her journey in property management, including the decision to sell her rent roll and the challenges of growing a business. We both agreed on the importance of support and networking in the industry, which is why we love the PM Collective's coffee and conversations meetups in Adelaide. These meetups provide a platform for industry professionals to connect and discuss various topics, including property management and personal life.
Balancing Work and Family Life
We all have a challenging time, juggling work and family life, especially with the recent announcement of a four-day school week in Queensland. This change could potentially impact businesses and working parents significantly. Skye shared her experience of starting her own business at a young age and the regret she felt about not having a support system or resources available to her at the time.
The Importance of Planning in Business
I emphasized the importance of having a plan when reaching the point of needing to hire staff or make other business decisions. We discussed different options, such as hiring in-person staff, virtual assistants, or implementing technology to streamline processes. Skye reflected on her past choices and mentioned her plans to start with a virtual assistant and potentially set a limit.
The Power of Voice in Property Management
Our conversation shifted to the topic of voice and its significance in property management. Skye shared her experience with voice coaching and how it helped her sound more authoritative and build trust with landlords. She explained that younger or newer property managers may not be aware of the impact their voice can have on building relationships and gaining trust.
The Relevance of Voice Coaching
We acknowledged that most of our interactions with clients are over the phone, whether it's cold calling or speaking with landlords for maintenance. We recognized the importance of effective communication skills in building trust with clients and getting the job done efficiently. I mentioned my experience with video coaching and how it has helped me gain confidence in front of the camera. Skye agreed and shared her own experience with voice coaching, mentioning the importance of pronunciation, pace, and utilizing pauses in speech.
Creating a Conducive Environment for Effective Communication
Skye mentioned that she tends to talk fast and can come across as overpowering in conversations. She realizes the need to find a quiet space and be fully present during client interactions to ensure a calming and confident tone. Skye also suggested that walking while talking can boost confidence and help in difficult conversations. The environment plays a significant role in shaping the outcome of a call, especially if someone feels self-conscious or is discussing sensitive topics.
